The Benguela Cove Experience

The trip to Hermanus from Cape Town is short and very scenic, if you take the coastal road Clarence Drive off the N2 at Gordons Bay, the N44.

This road ends at a T-junction with the N43 where you turn right. Easy peasy so far then ?!

As you begin the N43 journey you will notice on your right hand side on the other side of the lake, the stunningly beautiful Arabella Golf complex. Not only is the golf superb but as are their wines, trust me.

A little further on the right, facing the lake, is the equally beautiful, Benguela resort and wine estate.
The estate also boasts a superb fine dining restaurant, simply named Benguela Cove.

Paul and I recently had the pleasure of dining there with my lovely daughter and her husband……what an absolute pleasure and delight for us all.

The restaurant is situated in a beautifully designed and furnished private residence. One feels as though you are dining on a film set really, loved it……”ready for my close up”.

The ambience was in itself theatrical and amusing, whether by design or accident,I really couldn’t say, but entertaining all the same.

Our Maitre was a charming Man who insisted that his name was Jack Black (who were we to argue ?). ‘Jack’ was extremely efficient, knowledgable and made us all feel completely at home from the moment we arrived. He ushered us through the cocktail bar to the poolside terrace offering us complimentary Benguela Cove Cap Classique, rude not to really!

It was obvious to us that the waitrons were inexperienced but extremely polite and helpful. At one point I asked the waiter who had brought the bread basket to the table for a description of the breads, at which point he froze, grinned from ear to ear and replied “I really don’t know, he (pointing to Jack) told me to bring them to you, I’m new here and I come from Zimbabwe” exit stage left! We were in fits of laughter and the sheer candor innocence of the young man, right up my street, you couldn’t write this stuff!

The whole dining experience was superb, the food, courtesy of Chef Analie Badenhorst, was simply sublime, we are still talking about it a month later, a very rare occurance in our house, trust me.
