THE newly launched JHP Gourmet Guide™ has acknowledged both The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club with Two Plates each. According to the guide, “two plates are awarded for exceptional destination dining; extraordinary cuisine that warrants a special trip.” Only seven (7) restaurants within South Africa have been awarded two (2) plates. Fourteen (14) restaurants have been awarded with one (1) plate each.
Luke Dale-Roberts is the only chef to have two restaurants awarded in the top tier of these new awards.
The awards were chosen by “a panel of local and international professional gourmets who anonymously evaluated these establishments, taking into account innovation, consistency and service in addition to a wide spectrum of gourmet and sensory criteria,” guide author Jenny Handley explains.
These awards are part of a slew of accolades The Test Kitchen has received since opening its doors at the end of 2010. Not only has it been named Restaurant of the Year from 2012 to 2015 by the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, but Dale-Roberts won 2011 Chef of the Year and The Test Kitchen was placed at Nº 2 in the Eat Out DStv Restaurant Awards in the same year.
In 2015 it was ranked Nº 28 in The World’s Best Restaurants, an astonishing climb from Nº 74 in 2012, Nº 61 in 2013, and Nº 48 in 2014. The restaurant was also 2015 Winner of Continental Restaurant Awards: Best Restaurant in Africa at The World’s Best Restaurants.
In addition, The Test Kitchen was named in the Elite Traveler Top 100 Restaurants 2015.
The Test Kitchen is a veritable showcase experience where Dale-Roberts applies his expert technique, passion for true flavour and international inspiration in the creation of challenging and rewarding dishes.
The Pot Luck Club with its distinctive global tapas style of cuisine was placed Nº 9 in the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards and remains a buzzing favourite in the heart of Cape Town’s edgy Woodstock.
Exciting new ventures from Dale-Roberts this year include the launch of Luke Dale-Roberts at The Saxon in Johannesburg, where he is wowing locals and visitors to the City of Gold with his innovative, flavourful creations.
Meanwhile Shortmarket Club in Cape Town is set to be one of the hottest spots this year, when it opens its doors on 7 June. In a collaboration with Dale-Roberts, Shortmarket Club will be operated by co-owners chef Wesley Randles and restaurant manager Simon Widdison, both of whom have racked up enormous experience at both The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club.
