Earlier this week I paid a long overdue return visit to the Delaire Graff Estate.
The Estate is situated between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek on Helshoogte pass and is surrounded by numerous wine estates and the most breathtaking scenery.
The founder and owner of the Estate is Laurence Graff who created Graff Diamond International in the early 1960’s. He bought this magnificent wineland property in 2003 and began creating this truly wonderful masterpiece in luxurious accommodation, superb restaurants and exquisite wines.
The reason for my “forced” return was to introduce members of my family who were visiting from a cold and dreary England (both from a political and climate point of view it would appear)!! They were so impressed and envious that we (Paul and I) should live so close to “this little piece of heaven”.
The sculptures of Dylan Lewis and Deborah Bell, the perfectly manicured lawns and immaculate grounds were, and always are, breathtaking.
The sumptuous lodges are located in semi private locations throughout the estate and are accessed via golf trolley style vehicles if you don’t feel ‘up to’ the superb stroll through the grounds.
There are two superb restaurants;
The Delaire offering a truly wonderful menu with a stunning terrace to complete this culinary experience.
Indochine (our personal favourite) offering, as the name suggests, a veritable cornucopia of oriental tastes and culinary choices. Chef Virgil Khan ( a local Man) is a wizard in the kitchen. Some time ago, I recall, when my daughter Natalie and her husband Allen were here on one of their many sorts of the Cape Winelands finest, Virgil ‘conjured up’ a three melon curry for them as they are vegetarian and had forgotten to mention it when making the reservation (always recommended by the way). Chef Khan saw it as a challenge to produce something ‘local and lekker’.
Please, on your next foray into the Stellenbosch winelands, make Delaire Graff a definite call, if only to sample the superb wines and invest (possibly?) in the stunning array of diamond jewellery on show in the Diamond Boutique.
