Escape to Lourensford Wine Farm- Somerset West

When one thinks of great wine farms to explore, you may start with Stellenbosch, Paarl, Robertson or perhaps closer to home with Constantia but one wine abundant region not to be overlooked is Somerset West. The town of Somerset West falls under the city of Cape Town and is a short 40 minute drive from Cape Town CBD and has so much to offer. One wine farm in particular that is worth the drive is Lourensford.

Lourensford is a wine farm which you might already be familiar with, it tends to be a particularly popular location for film crews and has been featured in many local and international productions. It has plenty to offer but here are the top reasons to visit Lourensford. With the gorgeous Helderberg mountain range encapsulating the farm it makes for many a pretty picture. It also has a welcoming wine cellar where you can sample the wines produced on the farm.

If you’re feeling peckish then The Millhouse is right next to the cellar and offers a mouth-watering menu. The pork belly is a favourite among regulars as are their pizzas. Should you wish to work off those extra calories then there is a beautiful Life Retreat Studio  which offers yoga, Pilates, Zumba, adult ballet and more. Who wouldn’t want to go to a yoga studio set on a wine farm!

Right below the studio is the Life Retreat lifestyle shop and the recently opened Spiral Aloe Spa. The Spiral Aloe Lifestyle Centre & Spa  focuses on holistic health and the overall well-being of its guests. They specialize in non-surgical healthy-ageing treatments, healing therapy, and spa treatments. Right next to the Spa is Coffee Roasting Co coffee shop where you can choose from the exceptional list of coffee beans and have a deliciously freshly brewed cup of coffee in a vibrant atmosphere. Should you wish to leisurely browse incredible artwork then pop behind the coffee shop to the Henry Taylor Art Curator gallery. The Art Curator showcases a large selection of South African Old Masters, Contemporary and African Art. The bronze sculptures dotted around the farm are truly thought-provoking.

Make sure you diarize a visit to the Lourensford market. If you’re on the search for a new exciting market then pencil in Friday nights which is when they host the Lourensford twilight market or pop by on a Sunday morning for the harvest market. The market hosts a wide variety of vendors, plenty of delicious food and wines as well as live music.

The Twilight market is every Friday evening from 17h00-20h00 and entrance is free. The Sunday market runs from 10h00-15h00 (September to May). To learn more about the market visit their website over here.
