The picturesque Langeberg region ecapsulates the towns of Robertson, Bonnievale, Ashton, Montagu and McGregor. This makes the region the ideal city-escape getaway. Over the next few weeks we will be featuring several of our Must-Do wine farm experiences in the region and today we shall start with four of them Excelsior, Mont Blois, Van Loveren and Windfall Wines.
The above image was taken from a hill on the Excelsior estate and this wine farm definitely deserves to be on this list. Excelsior Estate, in the Robertson wine valley, has true heritage as it has been in the De Wet family since 1859. Aside from an adventure to the lookout point, the highlight is the wine-blending experience where you can create your very own wine blend. Carefully measure out how much of each single varietal you want and then fill and cork your own bottle. You can even create your own name and print the label then and there. This is not only tremendous fun but also makes for an excellent gift idea. After trying your hand at wine-making you can meander over to Graze Deli for a mouth-watering lunch over-looking the dam.
While Excelsior does have a more commercial feel to it, visiting Mont Blois couldn’t make you feel more at home. Since the wine-tasting takes place at the beautiful Mont Blois homestead and home to the wine-maker herself, Nina-Mari Bruwer and her family. Her husband Ernst Bruwer manages the three wine farms in Robertson region and Mont Blois Wine Estate has been in the Bruwer family for six generations since it was first purchased in 1869. If you want to see the true passion it takes to excel as a wine-maker then make sure you make a point of visiting Mont Blois for a tasting. Also their Chardonnay’s are superb.
If you’ve worked up a hearty appetite then Van Loveren is the destination of choice. They have a beautiful restaurant called Christina’s where you will be spoiled for choice thanks to their vast menu. Nestled under a canopy of trees and flowers it feels like a tropical paradise. The Langeberg region is rich in family history and Van Loveren which was first started in 1939 by Hennie Snr has a beautiful Tree Tour. Grab a glass of bubbly and a map and explore the gardens. Hennie’s wife planted a special tree for each momentous occasion that occurred in history or in the family. The garden is a bustle of butterflies and bright flowers and the perfect place to stroll through after a big meal. Should you wish to experience even more of what Van Loveren has to offer then their great variety of wine and food pairings that include an alcohol free, and kiddie’s option too, is a must. The Tangled Tree wine and Chocolate pairing is particularly exceptional.
If you are searching for a getaway far from city-life then Windfall Wine farm is the ultimate destination. Windfall’s self-catering cottages are situated in Agterkliphoogte Valley. With never-ending views, fresh fynbos scents wafting through the air and complete tranquility. This is truly a hidden gem. The 5 self catering cottages which over look the beautiful valley with a backdrop of the majestic mountains are fully equipped and can sleep between 2-4 people depending on which cottage you select.
