A delicious breakfast at Graze in the picturesque village of Stanford

The picturesque village of Stanford that stands on the Klein river in the Overberg is approximately two hours from Cape Town and half an hours drive from the famous coastal resort town of Hermanus.

The village was founded in 1857 when Sir Robert Stanford settled the land and began cattle farming the area. The village was given Heritage site status in 1992 and has become a not only a beautiful location settle but also for relaxing visits to the Overberg area of the Cape. There are now stunning wines produced in the area as well as maintaining its farming heritage .

Lomond, Springfontein and Boschrivier to name but a few of the wine estates nestling in the surrounding hills.

Recently there are a number of first class restaurants and bistros that have popped up and a fast becoming places of note even for the notorious “Cape Town foodies”. Quite rightly so, as the reputations of Springfontein, Stanford hills, Mariannes and Graze are really making a name for themselves here.

Kleinrivier cheese picnics are really something special with a varied selection of local cheeses and seasonal fruits packed away with local wines of your choice.

Every Wednesday at nine o’clock sharp (trust me I know what I’m talking about here). Graze opens its doors for the most divine breakfasts all prepared with local fresh and organic ingredients. They have a smallholding “out back” that provides them with a vast majority of there products as well as sourcing from local cottage industries. The products are also on sale under the stoep (porch) in front of Graze for you to take home and continue the healthy indulgences. The local honey and honey combes are divine.

If you would enjoy a leisurely cruise along the Klein river there are a number offering their services daily. A superb way to relax and take in the wonderful scenery of the area.

Bird watching is always a very popular hobby wherever you are in the World and the Overberg is home to over 200 species of different birds to ‘spot’ and capture on film.

From Stanford you can follow the road to nearby Gants Bay and Van Dyks Bay if you feel the adventurer in you being awakened. Shark cage diving and various other exciting ways to enjoy the invigorating ocean can be found thereby completing your Overberg experience.
